Cake

"This year I want a Minnie Mouse cake."

"Mom will you make me a Minnie Mouse cake this time?"

"Last year I had Mickey Mouse, so this year I want Minnie Mouse."

I was very prepared to make a Minnie Mouse cake this year... I had it all mapped out in my head and I was ready to make it happen. Then about a week before his birthday he started in with this.

"Well maybe I want Donald Duck."

"Could you make a Goofy cake?"

"Maybe I want a soccer ball."

I began to panic a bit... what if he wants a cake I can't pull off. I was running out of time to have a bakery make it. So I sat him down and we had a heart to heart.

"I just don't think I want Minnie Mouse anymore."

"What sort of things would you like your cake to be, buddy?"

"Well I like cars, balls, games...."

"Okay but this isn't 'Cake Boss' bud. We have to pick something Mom can make."

(light bulb comes on)

"Baseball! I want a baseball!"

"A baseball cake, you want a baseball cake? Are you sure?"

"Yep!"

Dining with Roses

A few weeks ago I meet some friends for lunch. We decided on a quaint little place I had never been before. I was the first to arrive and sat at the table taking in the atmosphere.

My thoughts went to the lovely ladies I was meeting with. They are charming, caring, inquisitive, honorable, funny, courageous and strong. I am blessed to have them in my life.

As I sat on the sofa with my little guy I noticed the light playing on the wall. So I pulled out my iPhone to snap a pic because I thought it looked interesting...

And this is what happened...

It ended up looking much cooler than I expected it to. It's amazing the things you can see through the lens of a camera.

A Very Special Valentine

It started at 5:30 in the morning when we left to catch the train...

It took us 2.5 hours before we were seated in these lovely seats to enjoy a peaceful ride to New York...

It has been many years since I have taken a train to anywhere. It is quite a fun and peaceful way to travel. I enjoyed watching the different aspects of America pass by the window.

Finally after 2.75 hours we arrived at Penn Station in New York City. We were quickly welcomed by a gust of wind carrying the filth of the city streets.

I might like to visit but I sure don't want to live there.

It is a remarkable city nevertheless...

After attending our business meeting we took a cab to Little Italy and had dinner. It is a delightful little part of New York that reeks of family and fine dining. I loved it!

After dinner we decided to take the subway back to Times Square... we were afraid a taxi ride would not sit well with a stomach full of Italian food.

Times Square of course was filled with people of all ages taking in the sights and sounds... it really is a bit of sensory overload.

We stepped into the Disney store on Times Square to pick up some souvenirs for the kidlets...

The next morning we decided to spend the day with a bit of American history and headed off to Battery Park.

From here we jumped on the ferry and watched the skyline of New York slip away...

As the ferry approached Liberty Island my thoughts were with those who came to America hoping for a better life.

What a beautiful symbol of freedom.

We left Lady Liberty, boarded the ferry and made our way to Ellis Island. I can only say that this island is full of life from the past. So much hope and despair for those who came... some who moved on to New York, some who had dreams of land further west and some who were detained and could only look out across the water...

hoping to be allowed to reach the land that was within view.

It is almost a holy place, quiet, peaceful and at times serene.

These pillars were rather amazing... I can't imagine what they must have thought when they discovered them during the remodel... so many messages preserved for so many years.

What a beautiful room the Registry Room was. This is the place they were all sent to be inspected, questioned and approved or detained depending on their health, finances and legal issues.

As we left Ellis Island, I couldn't help but wonder if the boats taking them to New York were filled with joy, trepidation, excitement and fear for what their new life would be. But above all I am sure they were happy to be leaving behind a place, that while beautiful, had the ability to keep them from their dreams.

Goodbye Ellis Island and thank you for helping so many start a new life in America. Land of the Free and Home of the Brave!

Once we were back the flavor of New York was everywhere. We spent some time checking out Wall Street and areas of New York we had not seen before. We ate a late lunch at a place called John's Pizza... you must check it out if you are ever in New York... it was very good.

We ended our last night in New York with a Broadway show. All I can say is if you have an opportunity to go see Spiderman you should take it. It was quite amazing to see them flying all over the theatre.

It was a wonderful trip with lots of unforgettable memories. I am very grateful to live in such a fantastic country. I am very proud of those who help maintain our freedoms and for all those who left everything behind to come start a new life in an unfamiliar place. God Bless America!!!

Quiet

Sometimes those quiet moments that send you into a panic where you quickly start looking for your child to see what kind of trouble they have gotten into... are just quiet moments.

A few days ago I was busy working on something when I realized I couldn't hear my little buddy anymore. So I tore myself away from what I was doing and began a sweep of the house. This is how I found my little guy... quietly cuddled up in the big comfy chair taking over the world of Mario. He was so engrossed in the game he didn't even notice I was snapping his picture.

A few minutes later there was a quiet "Yes" from the next room... I think he might have won his quest.

Sit Still Please

So I had this fabulous session planned out in my mind... but my model didn't want to co-operate... the little nut job. I finally gave up, but I did manage to snap a couple in mid-motion. I think he was just so excited about his Valentines.

Wake Up!!!

The next morning the storm had passed and all the lay before us was wonderfully, pure whiteness.

The kids were very excited to suit up and head out into the snow.

This little devil was all about sneaking up on his sister with a snow ball.

His aim wasn't very good (the snow ball is colored blue) but he had a great time.

After many false alarms this year we finally got some snow. They canceled school even though it hadn't started to snow yet. By noon it was coming down pretty good and began piling up. Those working in the city left work early and tried to beat the crazy traffic. Sadly not all made it. Many people didn't get home until the next day. It made us grateful that we were snug as little bugs in our home with no place to go.

Pilgrim made sure he was the first to test it out!

Snow days are great around this joint. The kids claimed the old lap top and played games to their hearts content.

By evening it was looking like a winter wonderland. Everything was so beautiful, peaceful and calm.

Late evening the snow plow came through. This didn't help the many people that were stuck on the roads trying to get home from the city, but we were glad to see it come down our street.

We hope to maybe see one more storm this year but if not we will take the rain. Just please give us some warmer temps.

Break is over...

Well it is time to put the work boots on again, so to speak. I took a little break from all the on-line bustle of updating posts and editing photos, but it has come to an end. Things were getting a little crazy around my desk... or at least on my desktop. So I am going to play catch up a bit.

We took a trip before Christmas and before said break to the Washington DC temple with the youth from our branch. It is a lovely place any time of the year but at Christmas it just has a magical quality. We enjoyed the Christmas trees and nativities in the visitor center, as well as the lights outside. It was a bit cold so we didn't linger too long.

It never fails to amaze me the wonderful blessings of the temple and the peace and beauty that surrounds it.

I really can't believe my girl is 15 but the worst part is... next year she will be 16. I am so grateful for her and all she does to help make my life a bit easier. It is a new phase in life having your children become adults and while there are many things about it that I love... I sometimes miss my little girl.

Freezing in the Valley

What great sports these people were. Not only was it overcast and gray but the wind was blowing and it was a bit bitter. They would bundle up with their coats on and take them off just before we stared snapping the camera. I enjoyed getting to know them better and we had a good time despite the cold. I do have to say that the kids were amazing. They were freezing and not one of them fell apart on me

I have this little boy, that needs to be comforted from time to time. He is a very energetic, talkative, happy child but occasionally he needs to just know that you are there. He will grab my thumb, hold it and tap the end of it with his finger. He has done it since he was a baby. I am going to miss it when he decides he doesn't need the comfort anymore but for now I will enjoy those moments when he grabs my hand and taps my thumb without missing a beat.

A new little bundle arrived on Friday the 13th. A busy day according to the calendar. A party was missed and a date to see Meeting Joe Black was postponed. It was a bit surprising considering she was over 2 weeks early. She was welcomed with fan-fare nonetheless and everyone was overjoyed at the sweet little spirit.

Now here we are 12 years later. Wondering where the time went and realizing that she is becoming an adult day by day. This year I vow to spend just a little more time sitting, watching, listening and chatting with her before she is all grown up.

It was great to work with this family. I love the way their daughter takes care of the boys. This is her family.

I love the tender smile of their mother as she patiently moves them along. This is her family.

I love the pride their dad had in his eyes as he watches over them. This is his family.

This photo shoot opened my eyes to a lot of things that I'm not sure I am ready for. It made me realize that my own daughter is going to be graduating in 4 years, 4 years really, 4 years. That's so not fair. But I will say if she is as polite, kind, respectful and wise as this young man then I will be proud to send her out into the world.

Parks, Red Brick, Railroad Tracks, Courthouses and Rivers

I love, love, love adventurous clients. They are the kind that are willing to be the subjects of my crazy ideas and I am grateful for them. I have been wanting to do a shoot in the river since my first client two years ago got in the creek in her prom dress.

My mind has been reeling with ideas but just couldn't quite find the right person. Well unbeknownst to me he was living right under my own roof. He has been asking me for headshots for quite some time and it just never quite worked out. Well I believe the following photos are proof as to why it didn't happen until now.

It all started with an old chair, so kindly donated to us from some good friends. The chair is 25 years old, rocked beautiful babies and has lots and lots of character not to mention memories.

Once said chair was loaded in the truck, the real fun began.

First the park...

Then the fall-out shelter...

Then the railroad tracks...

Then court square...

Then the river...

At this point I think he decided he needed a break...

So he jumped in the water...

And had some quiet time...

It wasn't a complete wash though... we got a few good shots of him to use in the future.

Now we just need to find him an office.

The Fair!

The fair has come and the fair has gone. All that is left is the tire tracks, dusty footprints, empty animal stalls and the last lingering scents of fair food...

MMMMM... FAIR FOOD

And lets not forget the memories. I have a lifetime of fair memories...

Attending the fair as a child in Idaho... the horse shows, the rides, the rodeo, gathering bags of freebies to take home and enjoying good food with family and friends.

Then again in high school going to the fair with a date... riding the rides, playing the games on the midway, laughing, playing and enjoying all the different kinds of food.

And now once again the fair has made an appearance in my life. Now I attend with my family enjoying all it has to offer... the animals, the petting zoo, the booths, the exhibits, the rides, the midway and of course the food.

Sadly, upon arriving at the fair this year I realized that I forgot my camera (the good one) and all I had on my was my iPhone... sad sad sad... I suppose I could have run home but once you are at the fair you just can't leave until they kick you out.

So after forking over all my funds to my kids for armbands, caramel apples, cotton candy and lots and lots of water. I got on the Ferris Wheel with my husband and snapped a few shots with the device iPhone calls a camera.

Now we wait with excitement and wonder as to what the fair will bring next year. Come join us if you dare.

End of a Chapter

A week or so ago I got on a plane with my mother to retrieve the remainder of her belongings still in Oregon. So many things could have slowed us down, gone wrong or made the trip miserable and yet everything and I mean everything went right. It was a trip full of blessings in more ways than one.

I had mixed feelings about making the trip but I am grateful that I went. It was hard to watch my mom say good-bye and turn that page in her book. I haven't lived in Baker for years but I always had a home there I could go visit. Now that is gone and it is a bit weird.

I snapped a few shots on the trip but I made certain they were things that brought only good memories of the West. They are things that are close to my heart and remind me of why I love it and the memories I hold dear.

I hope you enjoy this small glimpse into my soul.

Just Like Grandpa

This is my grandpa Oaks...

He played football for BYU and was quite good I am told. He was quite athletic and played lots of different of sports during his younger years. I only remember Grandpa playing with us grandchildren and he never disappointed. He was always up for a good game of whatever we wanted to play.

About 6 years ago I was blessed with this 10lb baby boy who is nothing but muscle and is built just like Grandpa...

I suspect he will put his all into whatever sports he chooses to play and someday I hope he plays with his grandchildren with as much vigor as Grandpa Oaks played with his. I am often amazed at how much he runs, jumps, walks and holds himself like Grandpa did. He is strong and yet kind, hard-working and playful and never misses the chance to play a good prank on someone. Yep he is definitely a descendant of Grandpa Charlie.

Sports a blessing and a curse

I don't know what it is but there is something about soccer. I am sure all sports are probably this way but so far our family has only entered the world of soccer. It seems that during the season your Saturday consists mostly of soccer...

Getting up, eating breakfast, finding the soccer gear, racing out of the house, driving to the field, finding a seat, screaming and cheering like a maniac, passing out snack, issuing congratulations, driving home, washing the soccer gear, putting everything away, sitting on the sofa and wondering what have a I gotten myself into...

Sometimes this is how I feel about soccer...

Everything goes by in a blur, nothing in focus, until the season is over.

But most of the time...

What leave me alone... I'm watching the game.

A few practice warm ups. He didn't think it was funny when I pointed out that he wasn't the goalie and he shouldn't be touching the ball... "Mom"

Occasionally it becomes a whole family event when Dad fills in for the coach and makes one of our daughters run a practice play to show them how it's done... "Really Dad you want me run down the field and kick the ball? Do I have to?"

Kason won't ever pass up a chance to make a goal.

You would think that the other members of the family would watch their brother play but no that's too boring so we must provide sideline entertainment, snacks and beverages.

My oldest prefers to read a book... which is usually fine until a wayward ball enters her territory.

Sometimes the sideline entertainment becomes distracting to the players and we have to intervene.

Most of the time the games have nice weather... not to hot, not to cold... but the final game of the season was a roaster.

The kids were so hot and sweaty... Kason came to the sideline and asked if I would pour a bit of water on his head. I gladly obliged and drenched the kid... I don't think he was very happy with me because this was what ensued.

Then he politely walked away and took a seat on the sidelines.

For now soccer is over but I am sure the fall season will be here before we know it. We must love this sport thing... next up

BASEBALL!!! Look for us in the spring cause here we come.

This boy makes me SMILE!!!

I have this little boy who somehow got these beautiful blue/green eyes and this really infectious smile.

He also has great hair that I am pretty sure he inherited from his Dad.

He is already gaining attention from the ladies at school which leads me to believe that he will be able to woo the girls like his dad as well.

His sense of humor is fabulous and when he is around there is never a dull moment.

But my favorite thing about him is that he is still my little boy...

-when he gets tired he still wants me to snuggle with him.

-when he gets hurt he still wants me to kiss and make it better.

-when he wakes up in the night he still wants me to put him back to bed (I think I would be okay with him waking his dad up every once in a while for that).

-when he gets sick he wants me to sit in bed and hold him.

-when he has a nightmare only mom can make it better with her famous pillow trick.

-when he has had a bad day he still says a hug and kiss from mom makes it all better.

I know one day soon he won't need or really even want those things but for now I will enjoy them and when they end I will relish the memories.

Watching your children grow up is bittersweet. There is that feeling of loss as your babies grow and change becoming more independent and strong. Sometimes learning the lessons of life the hard way and sometimes listening to the advice given them.

There is also that feeling of success when you watch them turning into young adults and you see them make the right choices and step up to the plate and stand for something good.

These moments together remind me of the divine nature of the Lord's plan and make me grateful that he found me worthy enough to be the mother of these four very wonderful, beautiful, funny, kind, loving and strong souls.

Not to mention that they "complete me"

There is that moment as a mother when you realize that your baby girl isn't your baby girl anymore. Of course in your heart she will always be your baby but in reality she will be...

someone's friend

someone's mother

and in the moment you hope that you are doing a good job of raising her so that she will be good at all those things. That she will make friends who won't try to persuade her to try bad things. That she will marry a man who will love her they way you hope she will be loved. That she will be a be a better mother to her children than her own mother was to her. That she may remember always how beautiful, wonderful, cherished and valiant she really is at all times.

And finally you hope that you will always remember these moments

The ones that remind you that she is always your baby girl...

and that will never change no matter how big she gets.

Movie Star

Graduation is in the air and seniors are so ready for high school to be over. I love this time of year because I get to spend some time with these young kids. They are full of energy, gumption and excitement to be heading out into the world and they are just generally fun to be around.

Gold Cup

Saturday May 1 was not only a big day for Kentucky... Congrats to Calvin Borel and Super Saver by the way. But I'm not here to talk about the Kentucky Derby today even though it is my favorite horse race ever. No today I want to touch on Virginia Gold Cup world famous steeplechase race and the 50,000 other folks who thought it would be a good idea to attend.

Let me start with the buses... oh the buses. They line up and go on an on. There were probably 100 buses there. Bringing 50-60 people to the races. Not to mention all of those who drove their own cars.

We were stationed in a tent on the north end of the field. Here is a view from our left down our section of the rail. People, people and yet more people. All standing around enjoying food and drink. Some a little too much.

This is the view to our right looking out over the tailgating section and in the distance the VIP/members only section. Yet again people, people and more people.

Did I mention the Don's Johns there were LOTS of them there. Some of the tented areas had a John right inside their little fenced area with all the food and drink. Yeah I thought that was kind of gross myself but who am I to judge

But that's not what we really came for. We knew there would be lots of people there and since it was in a field in the middle of nowhere you pretty much had to assume there would lots of Don's Johns. We were right!

What we really came for was the racing.

Being right on the rail was nice once the racing started.

The horses flew by in a blur.

All was going well on the first time around. The horses were moving gracefully everyone was clearing the jumps and they were clipping right along.

On the second round however things went bad. There was an accident on the other side of the field from us, about all we could see was that he fell and didn't get up and they sent the ambulance out. The race of course kept going and as they approached the jump near us this occurred...

First one horse and then...

A second went down. Fortunately no one on our end of the field was hurt but it is still a bit of a heart stopping experience to see. I haven't heard how the jockey from the first accident is doing but hopefully it wasn't too bad.

All in all it was a grand experience that I probably wouldn't pay to attend myself. But I was grateful for the invite, the new people that we meet, the good food, the great company, the beautiful horses, the colorful jockeys and the Don's Johns.

Dog Tags

So I heard about this great little company called Fetching Tags and I just had to pay them a visit. Once there I couldn't resist having a tag made for Pilgrim. While there are many dogs in the world who love to lick, I have to say Pilgrim takes the cake when it comes to feet. The boy can't resist when he sees a bare foot about. He must give it a taste test that quickly turns to a foot bath. It's ridiculous!

I just had to put a warning on him so here is his tag...

What a great family! I am so blessed with such wonderful clients. These folks were no different, I felt like part of the family by the time it was over. Family is one of the greatest blessings we have and I am grateful to capture it on film.

Back at the beginning of March I put up some maternity shots of a beautiful young woman who was so ready to greet her little bundle. Well on April 3 a beautiful bundle arrived, healthy, happy and full of love. I couldn't wait to snap a few shots of the new addition.

Big Sky Country

From the ages of 6-12 I lived in Wyoming... BIG SKY COUNTRY. I loved it. I know it is where I gained my appreciation and love for deep blue skies filled with puffy clouds.

This here is the ranch house (my home) on the ranch in Wyoming on the Henry's Fork river where I spent those years.

Isn't it quaint? And look at that sky and those clouds, how I loved those skies and still do to this day. It meant a long day of work ahead but it also meant cool breezes and happy animals.

This picture here shows a bit of the ranch further down the river. That pasture was the oat field (because they used to grow oat there) and the one further down was the new field. The new field because it was "new" as we had cleared the land and planted the field. Lots of hours spent with a shovel trying to get the water to go where we wanted it to. We didn't have the modern convenience of sprinkler systems, we had to flood irrigate from the river. You can see some of that handy work in the meadow to the front of the pic.

It was a beautiful place full of many secret places to play and wildlife so abundant you would have thought it was a reserve.

I loved the years of my life that were spent there.

Well I am all grown up now... although that is debatable some days... and I live in a beautiful valley nestled among the mountains of Virginia and just a couple of days ago I woke up to this...

Did I make a trip to big sky country and not know it...

Wait am I dreaming...

I think I might be losing my mind...

Nope they are really out there and it is really that beautiful and I am really that blessed...

And I thank the Lord everyday for it.

Dreaming of Summer during the storms of Winter

This past winter in the Shenandoah Valley was historic. We very rarely get a storm before Christmas that amounts to anything and this year we not only got the normal small storm that passes through but also were pummeled with a huge 18 inch storm. Of course we knew at the time that there would definitely be more because we usually get our snow in Jan. and Feb. and sure enough come Feb. we got a huge 26 inch storm. Well in VA when is snows like that the world shuts down so what does a mother of four do when her crew is home and she is losing her mind?

She disappears into the quiet, peaceful confines of the craft room and puts together a scrapbook she has been waiting two years to do. What you ask did we do two years ago that would get it's own scrapbook? Well we made a trip to Hawaii with the whole crew in tow, mind you not only our family but my brother-in-law and his family as well.

This is the beautiful place we rented on a private beach.

This is the Polynesian Cultural Center, which is incredible.

This is the family at Waimea Bay, beautiful spot and famed for large wave surfing.

This is the reason we went. My niece graduated from BYU Hawaii and we took the opportunity to support her and enjoy a little beach vacation.

This beach was different from most of the beaches we went to. It was incredibly rocky and full of pockets of water some deep enough for swimming, others only good for wading.

Spring has sprung...

Took a walk through the park a few days ago...

The winter snow has melted puddles abound everywhere... believe me I know my boys (Pilgrim and Koleson) seem to find them everywhere.

I love watching the buds on the trees go from little tiny bulbs

to flowering buds

and I am most definitely ready to bury my bare feet in the lush green grass.

A couple of nights ago I had a client coming over for some head shots for a pageant and since I don't have enough room right now to leave my studio up full time I have to set it up when necessary. This is where my little helluns come in . After we get everything set up I make the poor sucker who got snagged sit on the stool and pose for me to make sure I have the lighting the way I want it so that I only have to make small adjustments when the client arrives.

Well today this particular hellun was feeling a bit spunky so I snapped away only so I could embarrass her later... hey that's what parents are for right?

Oh yeah she is gonna hate me for this one.

This is that oops I did it look which looks a little to much like a "pucker" for my taste.

This is what she looks like when I can get her to quite goofing around. She was definitely blessed with looks that far exceed her folks. Lucky girl!

My sea of wonder

We have these great brown eyes in our family...

Some are a deep deep brown... they were so dark that when she was a baby they looked black.

Some have a hint of gold in them... like her mother's eyes.

Some have a hint of green... looks a bit like spring.

But then we have these...

...I don't even know where to begin... ice blue some days and minty green others with the longest lashes I have ever seen. If I hadn't birthed all 10 pounds of him I would wonder if he was dropped accidentally by the stork. Not to mention he acts just like his dad and inherited his dad's great hair... Watch out hon, I think you might have some competition. In fact the little girls at school are mesmerized by them as well... his teacher has even labeled him "chick magnet"... I think I could be in trouble.

But most of all I am just grateful that I get to look into the most beautiful eyes everyday of my life... be they brown or blue.

5 weeks

It seems like an eternity when you are waiting for a new little bundle to arrive... the time just seems to drag on especially for the mother. Frankly I can't believe the time is almost here for a this new little bundle to make her debut, a new grand niece to grace the family. But for now we will enjoy her from the outside while God finishes up with her.

The itch has hit.

So a few weeks ago a friend emailed me and asked if I thought Kason would be interested in snowboarding. Well I chatted with Kason about the options and he decided to give it a try. So I willingly tossed 4 hours of my Saturday away to take him for his first lesson. Let's just say he can't stop talking about it... not just to his us but to anyone who will listen. I think the itch is here to stay.

His form is not to bad for his first time.

His first fall... I think he landed it nicely.

He has been asking to go back up everyday since and wants to go down the bunny hill. After his next lesson he will want to go down a diamond run I'm sure.

Book lover

It could be said that I have an unhealthy obsession with books.

The colors, the smells, the words, the stories all of it is just a little bit intoxicating... hold on I'm feeling a bit woozy.

The bookstores in our local area have a mug shot of me behind the counter it says "Book Handler" beware of this customer she frequently comes in and handles your merchandise, smelling the binding and incoherently rambling.

Guess it's a good thing my significant other is an author eh?

So just before Christmas Jason had a signing at Winchester Book Gallery in Winchester, VA... great folks there. While we were there I did a bit of Christmas shopping you know for the little punks and their mom of course.

Well I found this little set of books that has rapidly become a favorite in our house. They are absolutely yummy. The creators are Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Jan Corace what a wonderful idea and fabulous illustrations.

Here's the set: "Little Pea", "Little Oink" and "Little Hoot".

Let's start with "Little Pea". You can't help but fall in love with something that is so darling.

Who doesn't like the candy that he must eat everyday... I need one of these at my house.

But who would much rather eat his spinach! Yes I'm pretty sure I love this "Little Pea".

Next we have "Little Oink". Cute little piglet that he is...

he HATES mess up time. Yes I think I could find a place in my home for him too.

You know what his favorite game is?

HOUSE!!! He loves to play house and clean up! "Little Pig" and I are good, good friends.

But my favorite my absolute favorite is...

"Little Hoot". I love him because I have a house full of "Little Hoots" sweet little somethings that love going to sleep.

Poor Hoot he has to stay up... he just wants to go to bed mom... let the little guy go to bed. I feel for you buddy I want to go to bed too.

But alas he MUST play for ten more minutes... this is Koleson's favorite part he counts with me.

And then finally he is allowed to go to bed... in his cozy little nest he slips off to sleep.

Yes I love these books, they bring me a bit closer to my babies, they bring them joy and they remind me that someday they will be reading to their own children. But for now they are mine to hug, hold and tickle. Sweet reading!

Baby fashion

Many years ago...

well enough years ago that I only think about it occasionally...

I was going to be a designer of baby clothes, I think it came sometime after having my first child, a girl, and realizing that cute clothes were not so easy to find. Anyway I had dreams of designing cute little outfits for baby girls and boys...

but alas you have to be able to draw something more than stick figures and I cannot so I opened the back door and nicely showed that dream on it's way.

Now that doesn't mean that I don't still oogle over baby clothes even though my babies are way past the baby stage... but I have several friends who are still having babies... this year I have 11 friends having babies and these are just the ones that know what they are having and guess what 10 of them are having girls... so it doesn't hurt anything that I oogle over baby clothes I just might have to buy something and give it as a gift.

So one day while frequenting one of my favorite shopping locations...

I got weak in the knees and things started to spin and all I could see was a blur of baby girl pink, red and white... it looked something like this

I sat down for a moment gathered my composure... I think I might have hit an older woman with my purse as she reached up to touch what now came into focus... but I can't be sure I might have just tripped her.

Underneath the sweater was this darling little dress... sweet little posies, wonderful material

and don't even get me started about this pocket... a perfectly placed posey under a sweet little saying not to mention what's in the pocket...

this sweet little bunny with the cutest expression and darling ears... I just want to crawl right in that pocket and cuddle with that bunny.

Okay let me pull myself away from the dress for a moment to focus on the cute little hat... oh so darling... at the top of the little hat is this...

tell me that isn't the cutest thing you have ever seen... a little tiny carrot attached to a posey it just makes that hat 100 times cuter that it otherwise would have been.

Okay now for this... this is such a minor detail but when you are someone who once dreamed of making baby clothes you think about your label. I love love love this label not only is it sweet but it's charming and inviting and I think I might have just bought if for the label but look at all the other fun stuff I got in the deal.

You have the name Bunnies by the Bay who incidentally have a website http://www.bunniesbythebay.com just in case you want to visit them.

... and then you have this 3 little carrots peeking up out of the dirt. Oh yes I LOVE THIS LABEL... did I say that already.

Now I think I told you I have several friends having babies so once I found the little number we just oogled over I continued shopping and low and behold I found another little gem... of course it's from the same company and I figured a girl can't go wrong... right?

How cute is that little sprout? Carrots and flowers and I think I might spy a little bunny again.

And ruffles on a baby's behind just send me into full tilt... "Um honey sure you don't want anymore kids?" He's running away now.

Oh and there is that bunny I was telling you about... he has his eyes covered playing peek-a-boo... or maybe he is hiding from the crazy lady oogling over him. "I'm with you buddy she's a little creepy... um wait that's me we're talking about."

And then there is the carrot... striped but I'm okay with that it gives it that little something that makes you want to go back for more.

But I think my favorite thing about this outfit is this tag... how stinkin' cute and clever is that tag. I was hoping there would be a little baby inside that I could grow in the garden... sure would be a lot easier on the body... right ladies?

but then you turn it over and I hate to admit this but I shed a tear or two because I realized that it is very true... they do soon grow up and it is very delightful indeed but sad as well.

So the moral of this story is, if I had started my own company making baby clothes this is exactly the kind of stuff I would have put into my design... a little bit of love and extra care in the details because after all the details are what make the outfit.

Nothing better in the world than a young couple in love and on Valentine's weekend to boot. These two are some of the sweetest people I know and I wish them a long hearty life together. I so enjoyed spending some time with them and can't thank them enough for being such good sports about sitting in the snow and trudging through the drifts. The sweet smell of babies...

This is one of the best things about my job... I get to hold and smell sweet little munchkins and then I get to leave them with their mommies when they start to cry and fuss. Totally cool new photo prop!

Okay so I am almost beside myself about this new prop. I have been looking everywhere for one of these and yesterday just happened to be my lucky day. But on top of all that I have a photo shoot on Tuesday involving a newborn and I am so excited I can hardly stand it. So many ideas and options I could just spend all day playing around with it but alas I shall be responsible and try to get done the things I should and just dream about Tuesday and the sweet little cheeks of my friends new baby girl and how gorgeous she will look in the pics. I love my new home and my new town but I do miss my old friends. I was so excited to make the trip into Ashburn to take photos of this family. I have known them since the men were boys and before they had the last four... not to mention the fact that I have a daughter who is the same age as their youngest girl and they got baptized on the same day... pretty special for them. So let's just say that this family is like family to me and I loved spending an evening in their home catching some of their life on film.

Sometimes as a photographer you want to mess around with a picture... usually it follows a great photo shoot and you just want to do something more... well this is one of those kinds of photos. The only problem is that you just can't find enough time in a day to do all the things that you want to do. So after many weeks of 5 minutes here, 10 minutes there, 20 minutes I wish... anyway you get the idea it takes forever to get it done but when you do... you are never disappointed.

It's always hard to move away from good friends but I am so grateful for the opportunities we get to meet up with them as life goes on. We had a picnic with our friends out west while we were on vacation and caught up with everyone. Some friends we haven't seen in almost 10 years came what a great surprise. So last Friday I went down to Charlottesville to take some pics for a friend of mine. I have always loved this place it just has a peaceful feeling about it but this was extra special because I got to catch a bit of their life on film. The kids had such a great time playing with my kids as well as showing them a bit about their life. I hope you enjoy the few pics I posted they are some of my faves.

What a fun day this was and what a great location. So many trucks, buses, cars and just generally cool spots. Senior pics are one of my favorites it's like a new beginning, a new leash on life. I even had a new friend interested in photography join me. We had a great a time and this young man even played the sax for us while I was taking the pictures. Enjoy!

I had a photo shoot today that reminded me of the that time when you hold your first baby and are amazed at the complete perfectness of that wee babe, well this little boy was no different. What an absolutely perfect little baby and beautiful too. I really enjoyed doing this shoot even though I would much prefer to be outside... today was a bit to cold for that... we a great time nevertheless and got some great pictures.
